CalNat Course at Camp Ocean Pines

Earn your CalNaturalist certification on the beautiful Central Coast of California, near Morro Bay. Rich with natural science wonders in forest, field, and shore, you will learn the required natural history basics of the CalNat program with a marine science flourish. The Coastal Institute CalNaturalist Program at Camp Ocean Pines is led by Chris Cameron, Executive Director of the camp, along with passionate expert naturalists and professors in the area.  This immersion program includes 7 days of field trips and lectures from enthusiastic leaders with decades of experience in the field. Food, lodging, materials, and field trip transportation is included in the cost.

Course dates:

Winter Class Class - February 3 - 10, 2017 - Program begins on Friday night with dinner and welcome/orientation.  Instruction begins Saturday. February 4 at 9 am and ends Friday, February. 10 at 2 pm.

Summer Class - August 20 - 27, 2017 - Program begins on Sunday night with dinner and welcome/orientation.  Instruction begins Monday. August 21 at 9 am and ends Friday, August 27 at 2 pm.

Course Fees and Options:  

  • On-site = Includes all UC fees, instructors, materials, certificate, pin, camp use, field trip transportation, AND room/board at Camp Ocean Pines - 7 nights lodging and 21 meals beginning with dinner and welcome the first night and the instruction begins at 9 am, after breakfast, the next day.
  • Off-site = Includes all UC fees, instructors, materials, certificate, pin, camp use, field trip transportation, AND 14 lunches and dinners.  Program begins with dinner and welcome on the first night and the instruction begins at 9 am, after breakfast, on the first day. 
  • Optional:  If you would like to receive 4 lower division academic credits from the UC system, there is an additional charge of $80 - Click here for info 
  • Not included:  The California Naturalist Handbook which you must order and read before arriving.

About the Course

iNaturalist data collection

You will learn how to collect and add your nature observations to the existing Camp Ocean Pines project: http://www.inaturalist.org/projects/plants-and-animals-of-camp-ocean-pines. Please set up your own account on the iNaturalist website before you come to class.

Capstone project

You will be given directions and time during the week to develop your own “Capstone Project” – a graduation requirement.

Citizen Science activity

You will be monitoring and recording scientific data along an established transect in in the San Simeon tidepools to add to a long term monitoring project called LiMPETS: http://limpets.org/rocky-intertidal-monitoring/


Cancellation Policy:

  • We will NOT be cancelling this workshop due to rain.  Bring a rain jacket and your rubber boots if we happen to have a rainy winter.
  • 50% deposit required upon registration, with 50% due 14 days before first day of workshop.
  • There are NO refunds or transfers to future workshops for cancellations made 30 days or less before workshop date.  Cancellations prior to 30 days before the workshop date are subject to a $50 cancellation/transfer fee.
